The Community Solutions Lab (CoLab) is a collaboration between the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) and California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB). It focuses on community engagement that  incorporates  contextual learning, service, and action research from the diverse faculty and students of these two institutions of higher learning. This initiative explores this underlying question:

How might we have more meaningful, long-term engagements to better serve the communities we live in?

These engagements include, but are not limited to student, faculty and staff projects, practica and research with national organizations that have a local footprint or exclusively local organizations on the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz areas. The data you will find on this site should serve as a resource as you explore past projects and establish your own research focus.

CSUMB is one of 361 institutions to hold the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s  Community Engagement Classification. Learn more about the Service Learning Institute at CSUMB.

Middlebury’s undergraduate institution was awarded the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification in 2006 and again in 2015. Learn more about Collaborative Learning at MIIS.

This concept was developed with the help of a planning grant from the Community Foundation for Monterey County.
